DevLog-2

Game Design

Designing video games encompasses even more than one would expect. When designing the basic mechanics and creating the Software Engineering document, we list all the features to be in a game. That means even the obvious features—pressing WASD moves your character, and enemies do damage. In fact, you start from the simplest features like that to the most important ones, and from there you construct a list of features you have to have in your game, as well as a list of what to tackle first! Currently, the development of the game is going well. Things we expected to take a really long time ended up going very smoothly, and the few bumps on the road we encountered were due to assets interacting poorly with lighting. Working with free assets from the Unity store is great, but the lack of consistency among the models poses a challenge.

If you are inspired to become a game developer in the future, here is our advice: take it one step at a time, and be gentle with yourself. Not a lot of progress in a week is okay, just look to get as much knowledge out of it as you can. Give it time and you will get to where you aspire to be! Don’t give up. If you come across an unsolvable issue, take a break, give it time. Look towards other solutions and seek to understand the error rather than find a quick solution. Delays are inevitable, persistence is up to you.
